Emerging Psychological Treatments for Chronic Pain
This event is in the past.
9 a.m. to noon
The Wayne State University School of Social Work invites faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community members to join us for Emerging Psychological Treatments for Chronic Pain presented by Wayne State Distinguished Professor of Psychology Mark A. Lumley, PhD.
Chronic pain is a ubiquitous public health problem, and biomedical interventions have had little success in treating it. In this workshop, Professor Lumley will describe several of the leading psychological interventions, particularly Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and more recently, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. These popular psychological approaches for chronic pain management have limited efficacy, however, and emerging concepts and treatment approaches, including Pain Reprocessing Therapy and Emotional Awareness and Expression Therapy, hold promise for larger effects. These newer therapies: a) target specifically primary or centralized pain; b) seek pain reduction or elimination rather than just improved functioning; and c) emphasize the reduction of fear and avoidance, including emotional processing of the psychological trauma and conflicts. Professor Lumley will present the conceptual background, development, and implementation of these newer therapies, research supporting them, and practical issues in their use.
After completing this training, attendees will be able to:
- Describe Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for the management of chronic pain and their benefits
- Identify efficacy and theoretical limitations of CBT and ACT
- Describe Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) and how it might lead to pain reduction.
- Describe Emotional Awareness and Expression Therapy (EAET) and its core techniques
- Discuss limitations and challenges in the use of these novel therapies (PRT and EAET)
This workshop will fulfill the state of Michigan’s requirements for continuing education in pain and symptom management.
