The Wayne State University School of Social Work and College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Department of Psychology are proud to host the 2024 James and Janice Prochaska Annual Lecture featuring keynote speaker Judith Prochaska, PhD, MPH, professor of medicine and senior associate vice provost of clinical research at Stanford University, and deputy director of the Stanford Prevention Research Center. Prochaska will present "A Stages of Change approach for treating behavioral health conditions".

This series is made possible in part by a generous gift from James O. Prochaska, Ph.D. and Janice M. Prochaska, Ph.D. to highlight topics related to Psychology, Social Work and the overlap between the two disciplines. James Prochaska is an icon within behavioral health practice. He, along with his partner Carlo DiClemente, hypothesized the Transtheoretical Model (TTM) of behavioral change. Better known as the ‘Stages of Change’ it has been widely adopted within behavioral health practice to assist in securing long term change in addictive behaviors such as tobacco smoking and drug misuse. The model posits that different intervention strategies are required as an individual moves through different stages of decision-making. We celebrate James Prochaska's life and work with this memorial lecture.

Judith Prochaska, PhD, MPH, is a licensed clinical health psychologist and holds addiction medicine privileges with Stanford Health Care and directs Stanford Cancer Center’s Tobacco Treatment Service. Applying the stages of change model in her clinical practice and research, Prochaska's work centers on leveraging technology to identify health solutions that address leading risk behaviors in disenfranchised populations. Prochaska consults as a scientific expert to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Federal Trade Commission, the Food and Drug Administration, the National Cancer Institute, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the World Health Organization.

Space is limited and RSVP's are required.
