Clinical Work with Athletes

The Wayne State University School of Social Work Continuing Education Ofifice invites you to this session designed to advance social workers' knowledge and practice skills when working with athletes in high school or college settings. The presenter, Jeffrey Williams, LMSW, CEO and founder of Revived Mind Counseling Services will discuss the complex issues that athletes encounter, including balancing mental health with the demands of their sport, performance-related pressures, and transitioning out of the sport. Social workers will understand athletes' issues and how to navigate and help athletes navigate through psychological distress while maintaining peak performance. Mental Health Professionals will learn to effectively navigate these challenges alongside the athletes, ensuring they achieve personal and athletic success.
Learning Objectives:
- Social workers will identify and understand the unique mental health challenges high school and college athletes face, including performance-related pressures, balancing academic and athletic demands, and transitioning out of the sport.
- Participants will learn and apply clinical intervention strategies tailored to address the psychological distress experienced by student-athletes, enabling them to provide targeted support that promotes emotional well-being and peak athletic performance.
Jeffrey Williams, LMSW earned his Bachelor of Communication and Fine Arts and Master’s of Social Work from Wayne State University (WSU) in Detroit, Michigan. He is a Doctoral Candidate at Middle Tennessee State University studying Higher Education and Student Success. Williams is currently a Faculty instructor at Wayne State University in the School of Social Work. He also serves as the Assistant Athletic Director of Mental Health and Wellness in the athletics department at (WSU). Prior to creating Revived Mind Counseling Services, Jeffrey served as the Inaugural Director of Student Athlete Wellness at Michigan State University (MSU) in the Athletics Department. Prior to joining MSU Athletics he was the Inaugural Assistant Director for Student Athlete Wellness at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Jeffrey completed his Cognitive Behavioral Therapy certificate through the Beck Institution and has been certified in Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy through Wayne County. Jeffrey Williams is a LCSW who has experience working in community mental health, K-12, and private practice. Jeffrey’s clinical interests include trauma, depression, and anxiety.
CONTINUING EDUCATION: Attendees can obtain 2 social work CECH upon completion of the training, payment, quiz, and evaluation. A link to download the CECH certificate will be available to attendees upon completion of the aforemtioned items. Attendees must attend the entire event.
COST: Two (2) CE's are available for licensed social workers for $15.
