Human trafficking is the use of force, fraud, or coercion to obtain some type of labor or commercial sex act and is often called “modern-day slavery.” Having knowledge about human trafficking and what forms it exists in our community will prepare health professionals to identify and support survivors of human trafficking.

The Wayne State University School of Social Work invites faculty, staff, students and community members to hear from Tehmina Shakir, MD, CCP, CCTSS, CCTP, CSOTP, CFRC, CCFP, Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, Assistant Clinical Professor of the Wayne State University Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences, and Director of Psychiatric Services at Vista Maria Residential Treatment for Youth at this free interactive virtual training.

At the end of the presentation, the participants will be able to demonstrate knowledge about:

  • Definition of human trafficking
  • Different types of human trafficking
  • Traffickers and Trafficking as a trade
  • Trafficking Laws - International, Federal and State
  • Trauma informed care of the human trafficking victims
  • Ethical consideration in treatment of survivors of human trafficking
  • Factors related to adolescent sex trafficking

The Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) requires human trafficking training for healthcare professionals. This event fulfills that requirement.
