The Wayne State University community is invited to attend an IBio faculty candidate seminar with guest speaker, Joseph Schacht, Ph.D., assistant professor of psychiatry & behavioral sciences at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), on August 14, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in the first floor seminar room of IBio, located at 6135 Woodward. The seminar is free and open to the entire university community.

Dr. Schacht will be presenting “Neuroscience-informed treatment of alcohol use disorders.”

Dr. Schacht earned an A.B degree with highest distinction and honors in psychology and philosophy from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, a master's degree  in psychology and a Ph.D. in clinical psychology and neuroscience from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and was a postdoc at MUSC prior to joining their faculty.

“Personalized medicine” is the future of psychiatric treatment for addictive disorders. In this talk, Dr. Schacht will discuss recent advances in using clinical neuroscience, including genetics, functional neuroimaging, and personality differences, to identify optimal treatments for alcohol use disorders for individual patients. He will focus on the effects of common variants in the OPRM1 and DAT1 genes on naltrexone and aripiprazole response, and will present the results of a series of fMRI studies that have shown that reward-related brain activation is both an important tool for medication development and a predictor of treatment response. He will conclude by discussing future directions for his program of research.

We hope you can join us for this interesting IBio seminar!
