The offices of the Vice President for Research, Provost and Faculty Affairs (School of Medicine) are pleased to offer the Research and Academic Development seminar series for WSU faculty, chairs & directors, postdoctoral trainees & graduate students, and administrators.  Seminars are free but registration is required.

This seminar, Promotion & Tenure at WSU:  Policies and Advice, will take place Tuesday, January 29th, 2019, from 1:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. in the Margherio Conference Center.

The moderators will be Boris Baltes, Ph.D., associate provost for Faculty Affairs, and Virginia Delaney-Black, M.D., M.P.H., vice dean of Faculty Affairs, School of Medicine.

Presenters will include: April Carcone, Ph.D. associate professor-research, Department of Family Medicine, Margit Chadwell, M.D., associate dean for Medical Academics & Student Programs, Leslie Lundahl, Ph.D., associate professor, Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Neurosciences, Jennifer Mendez, Ph.D., associate professor, Department of Internal Medicine and Ryan Thummel, Ph.D., associate professor, Department of Ophthalmology, Visual & Anatomical Sciences.  Charlene Brain from the Office of Faculty Affairs will attend this seminar to respond to any questions about the process of submitting a request for P&T in the School of Medicine.

Topics typically covered include: 

  • AAUP  contract guidelines for Promotion & Tenure; departmental and college guidelines.
  • P&T process & preparing the case:  external reviews & the role of the candidate; professional record; personal statement
  • The P&T Review Process from department review through university review
  • Importance of mentoring with the right mentor
  • Where  to go for help and advice: expectations on teaching, research and grants, and service

Note that this seminar will have an emphasis on P&T for the medical sciences (basic & clinical).  A second P&T seminar (with emphasis on the non-medical sciences) is scheduled for Thursday, February 7, 2019, 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., at 5057 Woodward Avenue, 6th Floor, conference room A.  Faculty who cannot attend their preferred  seminar are encouraged to attend the other as both present valuable general information for all disciplines.
