This event is in the past.
The Wayne State University Department of Ophthalmology, Visual and Anatomical Sciences will present its annual Deborah A. Iverson, M.D., Lecture virtually this year on Nov. 11.
Sasha Shillcutt, M.D., FASE, professor of Anesthesiology and vice chair of Strategy and Innovation at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, will present “Wellness is a Journey: Thriving in Medicine Day to Day” at 6 p.m. via Zoom. Dr. Shillcutt, chief executive officer and founder of Brave Enough, will discuss the impact of burnout during the course of a medical career, from the perspective of a journey in medicine, and how learning to fail forward can improve one’s ability to find joy during challenges. She also will discuss strategies for physicians to put their own wellbeing at the center of their life.
In 2016, she was awarded the American Medical Association’s Women Physicians’ Inspiring Physician Award by her peers. She speaks frequently to executives and leaders on the topics of professional resilience and gender equity. Her TEDx talk “Resilience: The Art of Failing Forward” has been viewed by thousands. Her writing has been published in The New England Journal of Medicine and the Journal of the American Medical Association.
She leads conferences and retreats for professional women through Brave Enough, which teaches women how to establish work-life boundaries to become chief executive officers of their own lives.
Her first book, “Between Grit and Grace: The Art of Being Feminine and Formidable,” was published in February.
Dr. Shillcutt underwent her residency in Anesthesiology at UNMC and completed an executive fellowship in Perioperative Echocardiography at the University of Utah Medical Center. She is a board-certified anesthesiologist and is certified in advanced perioperative echocardiography by the National Board of Echocardiography.
