MedFlix & the Neurosurgery Interest Group invite all students, faculty, staff, and alumni to a screening of “Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story”
Gifted Hands follows the life and accomplishments of Dr. Ben Carson, America’s most renowned pediatric neurosurgeon. In 1987, Dr. Carson takes on a medical challenge thought to be impossible, the successful separation of cranially conjoined twins. To find the creativity and determination needed to overcome such a challenge, Dr. Carson reflects on his life’s journey from an impoverished childhood home in Detroit to the halls of America’s preeminent medical institutions. Along the way, viewers see how Dr. Carson’s life is impacted by racial discrimination, self-doubt, and personal loss, and how the support of his family provides the determination to keep succeeding.
Objectives:
- Understand the professional and interpersonal challenges physicians may face during their education.
- Identify the impact of systemic racial discrimination in healthcare and education.
- Identify how these issues continue to resonate today.
