Title: Symmetric A-actions on A(2)

Abstract:   We describe the variety of left actions of the mod 2 Steenrod algebra  on its subalgebra A(2) that extend the action of A(2) on itself and preserve both the short exact sequence

0 --> Image(Q_2) ---> A(2) ---> A(2)/Q_2(A(2)) ---> 0

and the isomorphism between the image of Q_2  and the quotient by this image.
We call such actions {em symmetric}.  These arise as the cohomology of v_2 self maps

which have been used to construct spectra with cohomology A(2).
